Project FACTS: Fostering Accountability, Clarity, Transparency, and Science

The goal of Project FACTS is to systematically counter-detail lies and half-truths as they relate to the issues surrounding health equity.  This page represents a resource for FACTS writers to easily submit letters to the editor and to communicate with their legislators on issues that matter to them and their patients.

Our goal: Let no lie go unchallenged.

Our tools:

Opinion Pieces:

Letters to the editor and commentaries are effective ways to affect the discourse in the communities we live in.  In addition, they provide concrete evidence to media editors on what people are most interested in reading about, and so even if rejected they have some impact.

Steps:

1)Write a short piece on a topic you feels I important OR one that counter-details a recently published piece.  Keep the piece to about 250 words.

2)Go to the news sites below and review the recent letters to the editor, opinion pieces and articles.  Letters have a higher chance of being accepted if they contribute something new to the conversation AND if you have a local connection to the paper (including seeing patients from that area).

3)Submit the letter using the specific guidelines for each site.

Social Media and Comments Counter-Detailing

Now that you've thought about and written a piece on a topic that matters to you, be assertive with counter-detailing any mention of that topic that you see in comments sections of articles or on social media. Let no mention go unchallenged.

Contact Your State Legislators

You're not done!  If you feel strong enough about a topic to write a letter, also give your representative a call.  If there is a specific bill being discussed, mention that, but even if you just want to say that you support a topic or would like to meet with them you should contact them.  They are not experts in all things, and having a clear, thoughtful explanation of an issue is valuable.  You can find your legislators using the link below.
