Capturing the Flag Screening and Panel

  • 30 Aug 2020
  • 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM (CST)
  • Zoom

To wrap Civic Health month, MDHEQ is excited to announce that we are sponsoring a special virtual screening of Capturing The Flag- an unexpected story about American democracy that shows voter suppression happening during the 2016 election. The event will be held on August 30, 2020 at 12PM CST / 1PM EST.

The event will be free and open to the public-so we welcome you to invite friends and family, colleagues and community members, and promote through your social media for everyone to join us (registration link at the bottom of the note).

Following the screening, we will have a brief discussion and, most importantly, provide you with tools and resources to guide action.

The panel discussion, including questions about the role healthcare professionals play in civic health, will be moderated by Sakina Naqvi. Naqvi, who is a board member of MDHEQ, is also the Pulmonary Service Line Director at M Health Fairview and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

PANELISTS:

  • Alec Karakatsanis founded Civil Rights Corps, a non-profit dedicated to challenging systemic injustice in American law. Alec was a civil rights lawyer and public defender with the Special Litigation Division of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia; a federal public defender in Alabama, representing impoverished people accused of federal crimes; and co-founder of the non-profit organization Equal Justice Under Law.
  • Alister Martin is a practicing emergency physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the Founder & Executive Director of VotER, an organization focused on ensuring that those most hurt by the healthcare system are empowered to fix it by inviting their voices into the democratic process.
  • Rep. Kelly Morrison is a sixth generation Minnesotan representing House District 33B. Rep. Morrison has been a practicing OBGYN physician for seventeen years in Minneapolis.
  • Laverne Berry is featured in Capturing The Flag, as well as a producer on the film. She has worked as a volunteer Voter Protection lawyers in each of the past three presidential elections (2008 and 2016 in North Carolina, 2102 in Virginia) and during the 2018 midterms in North Carolina.

As Senator Richard Blumenthal said, “See this film, get involved, and watch democracy win.”

We look forward to “seeing” you on August 30, 2020 at 12PM CST / 1PM EST.
